The Road Surface Dressing Process

Surface dressing is also known as 'Tar & Chip'. To surface dress a road surface, we carry out a couple of main steps:

  1. A level, even application of bitumen binder onto the existing road surface from a spray tanker
  2. An even application of aggregate chippings directly afterwards to provide the solid skid-resistant top layer

Tar & Chip surface dressing is generally not rolled into the surface afterwards, instead relying on the weight of subsequent traffic to compress the chippings and naturally level out small imperfections.

Properly applied Chip & Tar should last well in excess of 10 years, even on dressed surfaces that receive very heavy traffic.
